Community Meeting on Sperryville Pedestrian Safety

Please note: the January 16th meeting has been rescheduled for February 6th.

Join your friends and neighbors on Tuesday, February 6 at 7:00 pm at The BASE at Blue Ridge at 11669 Lee Hwy in Sperryville for a community discussion on how to improve the safety of pedestrians and residents of Sperryville. Pedestrian safety has been one of the four missions of the Sperryville Community Alliance since its inception in April 2019 and was listed as the top concerns of residents in the 2021 Sperryville Community Study.

The goal of the meeting is to develop ideas for a possible grant to the Virginia Department of Transportation to fund safety & gateway improvement within and around Sperryville. This January 16 meeting will be a chance for the community to:

  • Understand the opportunity provided by this grant.

  • Contribute to the ideas that could be included in the grant proposal.

  • Identify ideas that could have greatest positive impact if implemented.

  • Be a part working groups to further explore and recommend ideas for possible inclusion.

All Sperryville residents and those interested in Sperryville safety issues are invited to attend. Please RSVP . Additional online opportunities to share views and a January meeting will be additional times to participate. We encourage all attendees to review past Sperryville safety proposals and the 2022 Flint Hill and Sperryville Pedestrian Infrastructure Evaluation Memorandum by the Virginia Department of Transportation available here.

On Wednesday, August 28, 2019, the Sperryville community met at Stonewall Abbey to discuss ways to calm traffic in Sperryville and improve pedestrian safety. About 35 residents shared twenty proposals in a lively and often entertaining discussion, and additional suggestion were made via comments on social media. Meggan Abboud moderated the discussion and a lead prioritization process that resulted in a rough ordering of the suggestions. Initiative proposed and their general priority order follows:

  • Reduce speed on 211 from Waterpenny thru commercial areas.

  • Add crosswalks on Main Street.

  • Make Main Street traffic one way.

  • Improve Sperryville gateways and relocate to better define Sperryville

  • Add walking/biking lane along 211 from Main Street to the Park

  • Visually narrow Main Street with planters and wider road markings
